I used to love ordering the blooming onion from Outback Steakhouse; it was always so fun to eat and looked just like a flower. The tender, soft onions wrapped in a crispy, golden batter made it a childhood favorite of mine. So when I heard you could find a version in the frozen section at Trader Joe’s, I had to try it. I picked up a box to see how it compares to the classic I remember. Read on for my thoughts on Trader Joe’s Onion Flowers.

Product Overview
Each Trader Joe’s Onion Flowers comes in a purple box priced at $5.49 and includes two whole onion flowers. Each onion is carefully scored, coated in a seasoned batter, and deep-fried whole.

Reviews and Rating
Based on the air fryer instructions, the onion turned out soggy and gummy in the center, while the edges crisped up nicely. Next time, I will need to experiment with air frying it a little longer to get a more even texture throughout. The onions themselves were soft with a pleasant natural sweetness, but the seasoning was pretty minimal, so a dipping sauce is definitely needed. Overall, it didn’t quite satisfy my craving for a classic blooming onion.
