One of my favorite desserts I’ve ever tried is made from this easy strawberry sando recipe. While we’re accustomed to savory sandwiches like the timeless ham and cheese, sweet sandwiches often get overlooked. Yet, this one, filled with whole fruits, works so well with slices of sweet bread.
What is a Sando?
Sando is a Japanese sandwich. These sandwiches typically consist of simple ingredients that are sandwiched between whole sweet slices of milk bread. There is a diverse array of ingredients such as pork cutlets, eggs, and different types of fruits. Oftentimes in Japan, people can grab a quick sando at their convenience stores like 7-11.
Easy Strawberry Sando Ingredients
- Five strawberries: You can use other fruits. I have seen grapes and orange slices in Sandos.
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 tbsp sugar
- Two slices of milk bread (you can use Texas toast): Japanese milk bread is not easily accessible in certain locations, so Texas toast is a good substitute because of its fluffiness.
Easy Strawberry Sando Instructions:
Whisk together the sugar and heavy cream until it forms soft peaks of whipped cream.
Next, lay a slice of bread on a piece of plastic wrap. Spread a thin, even layer of whipped cream on top of the bread. Don’t forget to cut the crusts; I completely forgot to do that and it is much easier to do it before adding the heavy cream.
Arrange the strawberries in a uniform direction on the whipped cream-covered bread, making sure they point in the same direction. Fill any gaps between the strawberries with more whipped cream. Place the second slice of bread on top.
Trim off the crust. Wrap the sandwich tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for a few hours, allowing the whipped cream to set.
Slice the sandwich diagonally for a long cross-section of strawberries.
