We all know and love Rice Krispie treats—those sweet, sticky, and crispy snacks that are a true childhood American classic. But what if we took that concept and applied it to popcorn? Transforming popcorn into a Rice Krispie treat might be the most brilliant snack idea yet. Imagine light, airy popcorn pieces covered in a sweet, gooey marshmallow coating, creating the birth of popcorn rice krispies. It is made with only four ingredients, so it is simple to make at home!
Rice Krispie Treats Origin
Rice Krispie Treats was created in the 1930s by the Kellogg Company, which also created Rice Krispies. They quickly became an incredibly popular American snack, made with simple ingredients like butter and marshmallows. These treats are known for their addictive sweetness and crispy texture. Snap, Crackle, Pop!
Popcorn Rice Krispies Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons butter
- ½ bag marshmallows: I used Jet Puffed Marshmallows. You can also use normal-sized marshmallows.
- Popcorn (adjust the amount to ensure a generous marshmallow coating). I used Lesser Evil’s Himalayan Pink Salt Organic Popcorn. I love using this brand because it only has 3 simple ingredients: organic popcorn, extra-virgin coconut oil, and Himalayan pink salt. You can use other popcorn flavors.
- Sprinkles: The confetti sprinkles probably look the best for this recipe, but I only had red sprinkles readily at home.
Instructions
Melt the butter in a large pot over low heat.
Add the marshmallows to the pot and stir until completely melted and smooth
Gradually add the popcorn, mixing well to ensure each kernel is thoroughly coated with the marshmallow mixture.
Continue adding popcorn until you achieve your desired marshmallow-to-popcorn ratio.
Add sprinkles (optional)
Remove from heat, let cool slightly, cut into squares, and enjoy!
