Air Fryer Char Siu Chicken

This Air Fryer Char Siu Chicken is a quick and easy twist on the classic Chinese BBQ favorite. Juicy chicken thighs are marinated in a sweet and savory char siu sauce made with hoisin sauce, honey, soy sauce, Shaoxing wine, Chinese five-spice, and fermented bean curd, then air fried until the skin is crispy and beautifully caramelized. Ready in under 30 minutes, this flavorful chicken pairs perfectly with steamed rice and vegetables for an easy weeknight dinner or meal prep.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound chicken thighs skin-on
  • tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • ½ tablespoon Shaoxing wine
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 tablespoon red fermented bean curd plus a little of its liquid
  • 3 –4 drops red gel food coloring optional

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the hoisin sauce, honey, soy sauce, Shaoxing wine, minced garlic, Chinese five-spice powder, fermented bean curd, and red food coloring (if using).
  • Add the chicken thighs and coat them evenly in the marinade. Marinate for at least 20 minutes.
  • Lightly spray the air fryer basket with oil. Arrange the chicken skin-side down and air fry at 380°F for 10–12 minutes, flipping halfway through so the skin is facing up. Continue cooking until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F.
  • Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
  • Serve over steamed rice with your favorite vegetables, and enjoy!
