Mango sago is the ultimate refreshing and summery treat. The sweetness of ripe mangoes combined with the jelly-like texture of sago pearls, all soaked in a bath of creamy milk and ice, creates an incredibly cooling and easy-to-enjoy dessert. It is incredibly easy to make; just follow my recipe and enjoy it on a hot day.
What is Mango Sago?
Sago is a starchy substance extracted from palm trees, notably the sago palm. The pearls are translucent and chewy, with a texture similar to tapioca pearls. It is often used in many Asian dishes, but one of the most popular desserts is mango sago, which originated from Hong Kong but is evidently popular in many Asian countries such as Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, and others.
Sago Macronutrients
Sago is predominately a mixture of starch and water, so it lacks other nutrients.
Ingredients
- 1 cup milk: You can also use half and half instead of milk. Half and half will make it more creamy. You can also substitute it for coconut milk or add coconut cream. The coconut flavors will give it a more authentic flavor.
- 1/2 cup mango juice: I wanted to add extra mango flavor to my sago. This ingredient isn’t necessary since the mango sago will be naturally sweetened from the condensed milk and the nata de coco syrup.
- 1/2 cup sago
- 1 cup nata de coco: This is a coconut gel naturally created from the fermentation of coconut water.
- 1-3 tbsp condensed milk
- 1 cup ripe mangoes, cut into pieces
