It’s nice to make a weekend trip to Houston from Austin once in a while. Houston is such a diverse city with many delicious types of cuisine. I knew I had to check out Mein since it’s one of the most popular Asian restaurants that the city has to offer. Here I will be giving you my Mein Houston review.
About Mein
Mein is a restaurant, focusing on Cantonese cuisine, which stems from the Guangdong province. Since many Cantonese immigrants migrated to other parts of Asia, the immigrants have left a footprint by immersing their food and culture in others. The Hong Kong flavors are evident in countries like Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand. Mein is here to showcase those flavors of the Cantonese immigrants known as “everyday food.”

I felt like I enjoyed some of the dishes and I thought some of the dishes were okay. It was pretty mixed, hence, the 3.5-star rating.
Sansai Egg Tofu (9.5/10): This was probably my favorite dish of the night. I never had anything like it before. It was soft, silky smooth with an addictive outer crisp.
Roast Duck (7.5/10): This dish was above average but wasn’t outstanding. I thought it was an amazing deal for the portion size.
Squid Ink Fried Rice (7/10): It’s a unique dish, but I did not find the flavors any different from other fried rice dishes. I felt lack the fried rice was lacking in flavor complexity. The squid was fresh, while the raw egg made the fried rice creamy. I would order this at least once because of how cool it looks.
Smashed Cucumber (8.5/10): It wasn’t smashed but had slits throughout the cucumbers. The slits absorbed the sauce. I thought it was a refreshing addition to our dinner spread. It was seasoned well with garlic, peanuts, and other sauces.
Lava Toast (8/10): The custard filling was creamy and yolky—not too sweet. It was basically like a french toast with lava filling. This dessert was definitely on the heavy side.
Beef Scallion (7/10): It wasn’t bad. The beef was pretty tender but it’s pretty comparable to other Chinese restaurants. The seasoning tasted pretty simple and I always love extra scallions to my dishes.
