I cannot believe I was able to pick up Iced Jeju Tangerine Tanghulu at Hmart. Ever since I witnessed the virality of Tanghulu all over social media, I attempted to make this viral sensation but failed miserably. I tried the microwave method but failed to cook it long enough, so the sugar stayed melted on the fruits and failed to crystallize. After my first failure, I had yet to reattempt, but one day I decided to shop at Hmart and stumbled upon Tanghulu in the freezer section. I knew I had to pick it up and try it out after my Tanghulu failure. .
What is Tanghulu?
Tangulu is a traditional Chinese snack—created during the Southern Song Dynasty—which consists of crispy sugar-coated Chinese hawthron on a skewer. Presently, you can see different sugar-coated fruits like strawberries, mandarin oranges, and grapes—to name a few.
Jeju Tangerine
Jeju is an island in South Korea with the ideal physical landscape for tangerines to thrive. In fact, 95% of Korean tangerines—enjoyed locally and internationally—are produced in Jeju. A large number of tangerine trees and plantations appear throughout the island. Warm temperatures and an oceanic climate make it the ideal condition for tangerines to thrive.
Iced Jeju Tangerine Tanghulu Hmart Rating
Unfortunately, the Iced Jeju Tangerine Tanghulu in the pack I picked up had melted sugar syrup all over; it was sticky and messy. The sugar coating failed to crystallize like the real stuff. Since, the Tanghulu was frozen, the tangerines were hard to eat since my teeth were so sensitive to the cold. The Tanghulu was crunchy because it was frozen but not due to the crystallized sugar coating. The tangerines were pretty hard to bite through. The flavor was not bad though; it is hard to mess up the flavor of fruit and sugar. Each pack came with two skewers of Jeju Tangerines for $5.99.
Iced Jeju Tangerine Tanghulu Hmart Nutrition
Each pack has two skewers, with one skewer at 90 calories. There are 21g carbs and 18g sugar for each skewer, which is no surprise because of the pure sugar coating.
