The famous Hong Kong dessert chain just held a successful soft opening in Austin, Texas on May 22. Hui Lau Shan, which specializes in mango desserts, has many locations throughout the United States. Some popular dessert items include sago, herbal jelly, chewy rice balls, stewed desserts, mochi, and specialty drinks. The Austin location uses fresh Ataulfo mangoes in their mango series items.
Hui Lau Shan Rating
Cuisine: Chinese
Price: $($): The drinks were about $7-8 range, while the stew desserts were about $8-14 range.
Ambiance: Casual, the space is small so it does get crowded
Mango Pancake: This was a light snack. The fill was whipped cream with a big mango piece.
Mango Chewy Ball: The portion size is large and I would say it is perfect for 2-3 people. The base was mango puree and it had chewy rice balls, sago (tapioca), and plenty of mango pieces.
Pomelo and Mango with Sago: This drink was super refreshing and pretty rich because of the ice cream. Overall, a delicious creamy drink.
Mango & Coconut with Sago: This drink tasted lighter than the Pomelo and Mango with Sago. If you don’t want a super heavy drink, this might be one of the better options for you.
Overall Thoughts
I absolutely enjoyed Hui Lan Shan. I may be biased because I am a mango lover, but I enjoyed all the mango series desserts we ordered. They were generous with the mango pieces, and the mangoes were perfectly ripe and sweet. I loved all the texture combinations of the drinks and stewed desserts; it was the perfect harmony of creaminess, chewiness, and sweetness. I would definitely recommend this spot.
