Craving dim sum at home? Costco now offers frozen prawn hacao, so you can enjoy this classic dish in the comfort of your own home. It comes conveniently frozen with simple steaming instructions. But is it worth picking up, or should you give it a pass? Read on to find out my thoughts on the Costco prawn hacao.

About Costco Prawn Hacao
A box of Costco Prawn Har Gao costs $16.39 for 40 pieces. I picked it up on sale for $12.39. It’s filled with farm-raised shrimp, wild-caught squid, and fresh ingredients like bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, and sesame oil. It also came with 4 packets of the soy ginger sauce.

Prawn Hacao Origin
Prawn Hacao originated from Guangzhou in Southern China and is a popular food item in dimsum. It was first created in the 20th century in a small teahouse along the Pearl River. The delicant and translucent dumpling wrapper require a lot of skill and traditionally was a symbol of skill for a dim sum chef.
Rating
I give the Costco Prawn Hacao a perfect rating because it’s honestly just as good, if not better, than some I’ve had at dim sum restaurants. The translucent dumpling skin had the perfect delicate texture, and the filling was well-balanced in proportion. I loved the added crunch from the water chestnuts and bamboo shoots. The shrimp was meaty and delicious. The only downside for me was the sauce. It came with a soy ginger dip that was a bit too sweet for my taste. I preferred enjoying the har gao with chili oil and soy sauce, which was perfect.
