The Trader Joe’s Kimbap came out in 2023, but even to this day, it consistently sells out. I remember spotting a fully stocked kimbap section in Trader Joe’s, only to see one older lady snatch all the kimbap packages and throw them frantically into her cart. I don’t think anyone anticipated how highly sought-after the kimbap would become, but it’s no surprise that other brands would start selling kimbap. One day, I spotted kimbap at Costco and knew I had to Costco Kimbap before it sold out.
What is Kimbap?
Kimbap, a Korean dish, consists of rice wrapped in seaweed and commonly includes fillings such as radish, vegetables, egg, fishcakes, or meat. The name ‘kimbap’ directly translates to ‘rice’ and ‘seaweed’ in Korean. Kimbap is incredibly convenient and portable, making it an ideal meal for trips or picnics. Fresh options are typically available in Korean markets.
How does Costco’s Kimbap Compare to Trader Joe’s?
Costco’s kimbap is priced at $18.79 for a pack, equating to approximately $3.13 per roll. In comparison, Trader Joe’s version is slightly higher at $3.99 per roll. Based on my memory, Costco’s kimbap is sweeter and more savory. Additionally, it is tightly rolled, whereas the Trader Joe’s version tends to break more easily. Since the radish is steamed, it loses its crunchiness.

I find that Costco’s kimbap offers great value. Despite being a frozen item, the ingredients maintain a fresh taste, and the seasoning gave it a good amount of flavor. The only drawback is that, being frozen, the radish doesn’t retain its crispness as it does in fresh, traditional kimbap. Hanwoomul is the brand that released it at kimbap.
